Create Your Own Baby Octopus in Crochet (Free Pattern)

One of my favorite stuffed animals to crochet is an Octopus. Along with the bigger ones I create, I thought it would be fun to have a 'baby' octopus. I searched for a pattern, but the only instructions I could find were rather incomplete and difficult. Since I have a habit of always finding a simpler, quicker or easier way to do most everything, I worked on this idea until I came up with just the right combination of stitches to create the octopus design I had in mind.

Plural of Octopus Looks Like it Should Be Octopi :-) - Is it Really "Octopuses"?

Over the past couple of years, I have crocheted dozens of these little 'octopuses' in all the colors of the rainbow and some in two-color combinations. It takes me about one-half hour to crochet and finish one, which I usually do while watching a favorite television show. I've given them as gifts, sold them in my Etsy Shop and found that children I meet as a vendor at craft fairs love them, as they are "just the right size" for little hands!

Since they are such fun to make, I decided other crochet artists would enjoy creating them as much as I do. This page will give you step-by-step directions to crochet a baby octopus. I hope you enjoy the pattern as much as I do.

Worsted Weight Yarns - Available online at Amazon

I use 4-ply worsted weight acrylic yarn and hypoallergenic polyfill fiberfill for my baby octopus, because both the yarn and the fiberfill is completely machine* washable. This makes it an excellent choice for babies and children, who love these little octopuses. *If washing and drying the finished baby octopus by machine, use a lingerie bag to contain this tiny critter so that it doesn't get 'lost' in the laundry' :)

My yarn of choice is Red Heart, but any brand of 4-ply worsted weight yarn works equally as well.

Using Cotton Yarn

You can also crochet a baby octopus with cotton yarn, but washing would need to be done in cold water or by hand to prevent shrinkage. Cotton yarn is preferred by many.

Baby Octopus Sometimes Needs a "Mama"

Mama and Baby Octopus by Coastal Crochet Crafts on Etsy

A baby octopus isn't the only size I like to crochet. This is an example of a bigger size Octopus I make, along with her 'baby' octopus.

Lavender Mama & Baby Octopus make a happy little family.

They have gone to live in a new home, so "Mama Octopus is not currently available in my Etsy Shop, but can be recreated upon request in any color you desire. Just contact me at Coastal Crochet Crafts.

@Lydia Ham: If you don't have an F size crochet hook like I use for my baby octopuses, any size hook will work. The bigger the hook, the bigger the finished octopus. :)

I love crocheting. And its great to make little toys and gifts instead of buying bought products. Hand made is still the best at least thats my opinion.

The crochet baby octopus instructions are fabulous! I recently had my granddaughters over and gave them a crochet lesson. We did chains. This will be a great next lesson for us. Thank you for your easy to follow tutorial. I also love your handmade gifts. So anyone can have these cute crochet baby octopus toys even if they do not know how, or wish to learn how, to crochet.
